HOW TO ACE 3rd YEAR OF MBBS WITHOUT ANY HASSLES
After getting through the monotonous routine of the basic 2 years filled with what seems like nothing but histo, histo and more Histo, its definitely time for a change. 3rd year is indeed a fascinating year, where you learn all about the medicines to prescribe, their side effects most of which are already in our households, the basic understanding of pathology and a whole lot of bugs. One subject which many of you will not find exciting is Forensics medicine. Believe me I didn't initially, but hopefully if you follow the below mentioned guidelines then Insha'Allah you won't have a hard time (at least not too hard :p). Lastly Behavioral sciences is a small subject which you won't be tested on this year in the Prof but will have to give your modular exams on, pretty simple.
PHARMACOLOGY: Very important to understand that Pharmacology is not just memorization of the drugs and its side effects, you need to know which system is it used for and be able to integrate it.
1. Mini Katzung, the major book you need to read to pass your exams. The MCQS in the back are very helpful.
2. Kaplan Pharmacology with videos of Dr Lionel Raymon2010, that man is brilliant and fun to listen to.
3.** BONUS points for SKETCHY PHARMA They REALLY HELP YOU TO REMEMBER THE side effects of all the drugs and their names as well, highly recommended. Do ask your seniors about it.
OSPE: This OSPE is not a joke or to be taken lightly, the biostats are very important and prescription writing. Make sure to practice biostats and get the extra handouts from the teachers, they test you on those formulas. Pay attention to the apparatus and procedures because they will ask you in prof viva of ospe.
PATHOLOGY: The basic chapters are the fundamentals of understanding pathology and super high yield so know these well
1. Medium Robbins for really understanding the details of how the processes occur in our body
2. PATHOMA*** Dr Sattar is brilliant, read the basics from his book with videos and they will help you to build a concept. This book is also SUPER HIGH YIELD FOR USMLE as well, read the first 4 chapters well.
3. LEVINSON Microbiology coupled with SKETCHY MICRO, YOU WILL LOVE IT. The picture stories and general understanding coupled with the indepth knowledge of Levinson will help you diagnose any bug
4. IMMUNOLOGY from Kaplan and if needed LEVINSON microbio has a section of IMMUNO at the back, it's written well but Kaplan is sufficient and easy to understand with the lectures 2014
OSPE: The ospe is doable, just ensure you get all the slides of the specimens at the end of the year and do them twice, you're more than set.
FORENSIC MEDICINE: The class lectures are not the place to learn, but to sit and be quiet or take a nap :p jk the teachers are not bad but try not to fail too many tests
1. NRA Forensic medicine, is a good book for understanding, it may seem boring but it has the material you need to be tested on, so do it well
2. Aamir Saleem is a godsend, this small book will help you pass the exam or atleast fail at not such a bad margin. It is summarised in bullet points and has the exact value and details of POISONS so use it well for that (plus know the toxic doses and mechanism of action)
3. Sir's notes, you can get these from the college bookshop or just use their slides, they are good and often a source not given much credit.
4. SHAHBAZ, if you need to understand in depth or have extra time then do this, personally the above mentioned books will suffice.
BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES: The book by Mowadat ali Rana is enough.
PASTPAPERS: I really cant stress this enough, pastpapers ARE the key, you might be able to have a pretty great idea about the whole topic but not knowing how you would be questioned in the exam can put you in some trouble. There are a few particular points that you only pick up from reading the scenarios in pastpapers. So do not let go of them.
WARDS: Your first exposure to the hospital, ensure you always have your overall on you, wear your college id card and now is the time to buy a Stethoscope. DO NOT TRUST SALMAN FROM BOOKSHOP, buy a good steth, LITTMAN STETHS. An expensive investment but worth it, if you don't want to spend too much then CERTEZA makes good affordable steths.
1.MEDICINE IS WHERE YOU LEARN, always have your BEDSIDE book with you and read it before your ward class. learn the most and make the most of it.
2. SURGERY: Focus on the pain stages and suture types.
Rest just mark your attendance and listen to teacher quietly :p
Best of luck to everyone, study well not hard.
